Northern Club 'Rising Stars' Calf Show 2019

The annual Northern Club ‘Rising Stars’ Calf Show is taking place on Sunday 10 November at Thirsk Farmers Auction Mart in North Yorkshire. The judging starts at 9.30am and this year's judge is James Frame. The event is kindly sponsored by the Beef Shorthorn Cattle Society, Morrisons plc and CM Varley Co Ltd.

The show is open to all members of the Beef Shorthorn Society and all cattle shown to be UK born, pedigree registered Beef Shorthorn Calves born on or after 1 September 2018.

Rosettes will be awarded to animals standing 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th in each class and a champion sash will be awarded to the champion calf.

Prize money: 1st £25, 2nd £15, 3rd £10, 4th £5


Heifer calf born on or after 1 September 2018 -  31 December 2018
Bull calf born on or after 1 September 2018 - 31 December 2018
Heifer calf born on or after 1 January 2019
Bull calf born on or after 1 January 2019

Pair’s class must be breed by the exhibitor and must have been shown in the individual class above.

The classes will be split after entries close according to numbers and age of calves entered.

The winner of the overall championship will be forward to be judged in the 'Interbreed championship'.

Championships awards

The Male champion will be awarded 'The CM Varley Cup' and rosette.

The Female champion will be awarded 'The North of England Beef Shorthorn Club Trophy' and rosette.

The champion Calf will be awarded 'The Perpetual Jeffery Cup' and champion sash.

The overall champion Young Handler will receive a prize (still to be confirmed).

Entry fee

An entry form must be fully completed to enter the Calf Show and an entry fee of £12 per calf/pair must be received before 25 October 2019. No Late entries will be accepted.

Cheques made payable to the 'North of England Beef Shorthorn Club'. Completed entry forms and payment must be returned to club secretary: Caroline Ivinson, Sandwick Farm, Ousby, Penrith, Cumbria CA10 1QB.

Cattle information

Cattle are not permitted into the market until show day, and must be penned by 8.45am.

No straw is allowed in the market – sawdust will be provided. All cattle must be adequately trained to lead by halter.

Passports must be accompany all animals to the show and be handed to the organisers on arrival.

All animals must be abide by current TB regulations.

Young handlers

There is no entry fee for Young Handers classes and entries for those classes will be taken on the day. It is the handlers and NOT the calves that will be judged. All young handlers will be expected to wear a clean white coat.

Classes: under 16 years and on show day and 16-21 years. Rosettes will be awarded to 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th place in each class.


The Auction Mart café will be open on the day for breakfasts, lunches, tea and coffee, etc.
