February news

Maybe a little belated but a 'Happy New year' to you all, we hope for those who have started calving that it's going well. We’ve not sent a newsletter since our AGM, so for those that could not attend then here is a quick update.

Chair, Treasurer and Secretary are still the same. After receiving advice of BSH society, clubs were advised to have Public & Employer Liabilities Insurance. The AGM agreed to take out insurance to cover the clubs visits and Herd Competition judge, and this has subsequently been put in place. On that note, if you are hosting a visit of any description then you are required to complete a Health and Safety form to mitigate the liabilities and inform your insurer of the event. Forms either available from the club or from the Breed Secretary, Jo Bailey.

2017 Club Calf Show

I am sure you will have read but we had a record number of entries and many thanks go to our Judge, Mathew Thomson (Shawhill) who had the hard task of sorting some exceptional calf classes out. Overall champion went to Gerald Turton with Ury maid X1206 of Upsall and Reserve champion was Harry Horrell with Podehole Lincoln. Young Handler winner was Beth Barker.

Skipton sale

Generally a solid trade and again well done to Gerald and team on topping the sale with Clipper X1152 of Upsall at 6,500gns.

Subscriptions

It’s again that time of year when subs are due, so Andrew is keen for you to send your money. To help cover the additional expense of insurance, the AGM approved a slight rise in subs this year. Membership applications need to be returned with a cheque or, if you prefer, you can email the club with details and bank transfer.

Family membership £15.00 | Single membership £10

Shows

Just a reminder that if you’re asked to judge a show, please do not accept another judging position within the same area. It’s not good for the shows to have the same judge.

Late May/early June

This is still in the development stages but the suggestion is to visit a herd in the Midlands. This could mean an overnight stay for some. Please let us know if this is practical at this time of year and whether you would you be interested.

Herd Competition
We have successfully secured Tommy Staunton from the Caramba herd to judge this year’s competition. Timeframes of Tommy’s availability are still to be confirmed. We will update you and send out entry forms later in the year.

September weekend visit
Some NI breeders have invited the club over to visit some herds, this includes Castlemount and Cherryvalley, and we have a few more herd visits to be confirmed, as well as costs. If you’re interested at this stage please drop us a line.

6 October 2018 - AGM
Joanne and Michael Souter (Jodame Herd) have offered to host the 2018 AGM at Moorcock Inn, Eggleston, Barnard Castle DL12 0AU. They have a large function room and newly refurbished bedrooms, and have offered to put Shorthorn beef on the menu. So after a pre-Christmas trip out by a couple of members (very good food), we booked the AGM. Please put this in your diary. We also recommend you call in if you are ever in the area.

We have been asked if anyone from the club - or a group of club members - would be interested in organising and running the club café/bar. This could be sandwiches and cakes – no hot food required - and a stocked bar. You could take on the bar or refreshment alone. If you are interested in helping, please call Caroline Ivinson on 01768 881343 ASAP.

It is also likely that the Club will be asked again to assist manning the stand. Andrew Thompson has agreed to co-ordinate, so please let him know if you’re available on 01254 831472.
