Judge’s Report

Judge-Jane-Landers.jpg

I was delighted to be asked to judge the ‘Rising Stars’ calf show held at Thirsk Auction Mart. I was extremely impressed by the big entry of calves forward.

My first prizes in the bull calf classes all had different qualities: width, length, locomotion and bull-like characteristics, which is what I was looking for. When they lined up, my Male Champion, Mayfield Maximus Primus, really caught my eye with the Reserve Champion, Beautry Malfoy also standing to attention.

The female section was tremendous with some real quality throughout and many different types make the beef shorthorn a special breed. In class 5, Runleymill Roxburgh Lass came away with 1st prize, she was a really sharping looking female who carried herself with great style – something I really like to see in a breeding female. The 2nd placed Shawhill Foxglove Layla was also a lovely heifer but just didn’t quite show herself as well on the day, more will surely come of her.

Class 6 continued this great trend of quality cattle with Clipper X1287 of Upsall being the best of a really strong class. Into class 7, Beautry Shauna Myrtle took the top prize, she was a really stunning heifer showing every quality I was looking for. Clipper X1303 of Upsall was my first placed heifer in class 8, again a lovely heifer; and in my final class it was Jodame Madonna, a very correct heifer being placed 1st.

My female champion went to Beautry Shauna Myrtle, she just had it all: conformation, locomotion and female style presented wonderfully and a real credit to the breed – and my reserve Runleymill Roxburgh lass also had great female quality.

Overall Champion went to Beautry Shauna Myrtle with reserve overall going to Mayfield Maximus Primus. I was extremely pleased to see Beautry Shauna Myrtle going on to win reserve overall in the interbreed championship.

It was great to see a big entry of enthusiastic young handlers forward with some having more experience than others, but they all did a great job. When it came to overall both 1st placed junior handler Beth Barker and senior John McCulloch did very well with Beth just pipping John to the post.

I would like to thank the club for giving me the honour of judging and thank the exhibitors for their hard work. It was a lovely day, the Beef Shorthorns have a great future ahead!
